As part of their HyFRed demonstration project, the partners are focusing on an approach that opens up new avenues for hydrogen applications in the steel industry. Through this project, the partners aim to demonstrate that so-called hydrogen-based fine ore reduction (HyFRed) has the potential to further reduce emissions and lower the costs of green steel. The project is taking place within the framework of the Helmholtz Cluster for a Sustainable and Infrastructure-Compatible Hydrogen Economy (HC-H2). The Institute for a sustainable Hydrogen Economy (IHE) at the Research Centre coordinates the cluster. In addition, as part of HyFRed, a team from the institute is investigating which hydrogen storage methods are best suited to the new plant concepts.
