Professor Peter Wasserscheid of Forschungszentrum Jülich has been appointed Coordinator of the Clean Hydrogen Joint Programme of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). The programme brings together Europe’s leading research expertise in hydrogen technologies and forms part of a network of more than 250 research organisations and universities across Europe.. The European Energy Research Alliance is closely involved in the European Union’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan), which coordinates the development of key energy and climate technologies across Europe. Forschungszentrum Jülich is a member of the EERA and actively contributes to several of its research programmes.
Within the Clean Hydrogen programme, researchers from numerous countries work together to advance the scientific foundations and technological prospects of hydrogen as both an energy carrier and a basic chemical feedstock. The programme collaborates closely with other key stakeholders across the European hydrogen research and innovation ecosystem, particularly Hydrogen Europe Research, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, and the Hydrogen Working Group established under the SET Plan.
The programme covers a broad range of topics, including hydrogen production and utilisation in electrochemical conversion technologies, a wide spectrum of chemical hydrogen storage technologies, and applications in industry, transport, process heat, energy trading, and the strategic storage of energy. These activities are complemented by research into methodological development and systems analysis. Overall, the EERA programme aims to support the establishment of a European hydrogen economy that delivers sustainability and resilience at competitive cost.

Professor Peter Wasserscheid is Director of the Institute for a sustainable Hydrogen Economy (IHE) and Director of the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN), both of which are part of Forschungszentrum Jülich. He also holds the Chair of Chemical Reaction Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. His research focuses, among other areas, on chemical hydrogen storage and on innovative technologies for the production, transport, and utilisation of hydrogen.
